Inhalation Devices Two distinct breath-powered systems, engineered for proven ease-of-use, patient acceptance, and manufacturability.
Easy to use, our Single-Use and Reusable Inhalers are breath-powered, so they require only the patient’s inhalation effort to deliver the powder. One breath delivers one dose. It’s as simple as placing the inhaler in the mouth and inhaling. MannKind’s inhalers efficiently focus the energy supplied by the patient’s breath directly onto the dry powder resulting in high delivery performance.
When utilized with Technosphere® formulations, greater than 90% of the powder is delivered to the patient with ~70% of that in the respirable range. MannKind’s inhalers show very little change in performance over a wide range of inhalation efforts and produce high bioavailability. In a handling study, pediatric subjects as young as four years old were readily able to use the inhaler.
How do MannKind’s inhalers work? The inhalers use the patient’s breath to drive a sophisticated yet simple mechanism. Upon inhalation, the dry powder formulation is lifted and broken into small particles appropriately sized for inhalation. The flow mechanics are engineered to produce aggressive airstream actions for effective de-agglomeration while keeping the powder moving slowly. This slow moving powder effectively navigates the airways for delivery into the lung with minimal deposition at the back of the throat.
Pre-loaded for Short-Term Use. Our Single-Use (acute treatment) Inhalers are ideal for therapies that are non-chronic, time of need or short duration. Pre-loaded with a prescribed dry powder, patients simply push a trigger and inhale their medicine.
